Easy Resolutions for an Organized 2017

If you’re like most people, you’ll spend some time as the year winds down thinking about what you want to accomplish in 2017. As you do, it may be worth making some resolutions related to keeping your home (and life) neat and organized. We could all do a better job of decluttering and organizing. Here are some resolutions to add to your list.

Resolution #1: Start with holiday decorations

Do you have holiday decorations that you never used this year? When you’re getting ready to store your decorations, take some time to go through what you didn’t use and make a pile of ornaments to donate or sell. There’s no point in continuing to store decorations that you don’t like or use. Downsizing your holiday trimmings will help free up storage space for other things.

Resolution #2: Put monthly downsizing on your to-do list

The chances are good that you have too many possessions – including things that you don’t really like or use. Instead of holding onto those items for another year, make a resolution that you’ll get rid of a certain number of belongings each month. If you have a lot of things to get through, you might even consider resolving to get rid of one item per day.

Resolution #3: Set housekeeping goals

Are you the type of person who always loads up the dishwasher before bed, or do you wait until the kitchen’s a mess before dealing with it? One good way to have a more organized new year is to set up a housekeeping schedule and stick to it. For example, you might designate Saturday as laundry day, Sunday for vacuuming, and Monday for grocery shopping. This is also a good opportunity to establish chores for your kids.

Resolution #4: Break down a big organizational goal into manageable tasks

Is this the year you want to reorganize your garage or tackle your cluttered attic? Instead of putting it on your list as one big resolution – something that might be overwhelming and thus not get done – try breaking it down into several smaller tasks. For example, you might designate January as the month you catalog what you have, February for sorting, and March for donations and consignment.

Resolution #5: Make a cleaning caddy to speed up housework

For a lot of us, cleaning the house is a dreaded task. Every time we do it, we have to gather cleaning supplies and tote them around from room to room. One way to make it less of a hassle is to get a cleaning caddy and put your most frequently-used cleaning supplies in it. That way, everything will be in one place and you can tote it with you as you clean.

Resolution #6: Create a master calendar to keep track of important events

It’s just as important to organize your time and obligations as it is to sort through your physical belongings. If you don’t already have one, buy a calendar (or install a calendar app on your phone) to keep track of where you need to be and what you need to do. If you have kids and need to manage their schedules too, it may be helpful simply to hang a paper wall calendar in a communal space, like the kitchen. One nice option is to buy a dry-erase calendar that you can use each month, filling in events as you go.

These six resolutions are a good way to start – and you can add others to suit your lifestyle and schedule. There’s no reason that 2017 can’t be your most organized year yet!
