How to Get the Most Out of Your Spring Cleaning

Spring is almost here – and for many people, that means it’s time to think about spring cleaning. The arrival of warmer weather is the perfect opportunity to store seasonal items, get rid of winter dust, and get your home in order.

We’ve put together some common-sense tips to make sure that your spring cleaning doesn’t overwhelm you. Here they are:

#1: Make a List of Tasks

One of the first things to do is to go through your home room by room and make a list of the spring cleaning tasks you want to complete. It’s easy to miss things if you don’t take a methodical approach.

You can start wherever you like, but we think it’s helpful to walk through your home, stand in each room, and spend a few minutes considering what you want and need to get done. Write everything down. Then, rate each task in order of importance.

#2: Inventory Your Cleaning Products

Once you’ve decided what you need to get done, you should take a complete inventory of your cleaning products. You probably have some on hand, but you may not know what you have (or how much you have) of the products you’ll need.

We also think that before you clean, you might want to consider going green with your cleaning products. Green products contain fewer harmful chemicals than traditional cleaning products. They’re kinder to your family, your pets, and the environment.

#3: Make a Spring Cleaning Schedule

Once you’ve got a list and you’ve laid in a supply of cleaning products, it’s time to think about your spring cleaning schedule. A lot of people make the mistake of thinking they must do everything in a single day. We understand the desire to finish your spring cleaning quickly, but it’s important to be realistic.

When you try to clean an entire house in a single day, you’re likely to get tired long before you’re finished. After all, cleaning is hard work! Instead of overdoing it, try spreading it out over several days or even several weeks. Tackling even one deep cleaning task a day will help you make progress.

#4: Sort as You Go

While you’re doing your spring cleaning, you’ll be going through every room of your house. That makes this is the perfect time to get rid of items you no longer use, want, or need.

One easy way to do it is to put four boxes in the middle of a room when you start. Label them like this:

  •  Trash
  •  Recycle
  •  Donate
  •  Sell

Placing items in the boxes as you clean will make it easier for you to deal with them when you’re done. You might move the “sell” items to the garage for a yard sale, put “donate” items in your car to drop off at a local shelter, and sort trash and recycling into bins for your weekly pick-up.

#5: Get Professional Help If You Need It

The final thing to consider is getting professional help if you need it. If it’s been a while since you’ve done a thorough cleaning of your home – or if you don’t have the time or physical ability to do the deep cleaning tasks yourself – then hiring someone to help is a great way to make sure it gets done.

Keep in mind that you may be able to get away with hiring someone for just a day or two to help with the more involved cleaning tasks. It’s an investment, but one that can help you get your home in order more quickly than if you had to do everything yourself.


Spring cleaning is a new beginning for you and your home.
